Biocorrosion of Carbon Steel under Controlled Laboratory Conditions

چکیده

In the Iberian Pyritic Belt (SW Europe), Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is consequence of interaction physical-chemical and biological factors, where aerobic Fe and/or S oxidizing chemolithotrophic anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria play an essential role. As a result, polluted waters are highly acidic (pH 2–3) contain numerous dissolved or suspended metals, which gives them powerful corrosive action on constructions related to mining activities with high economic losses. To verify role in corrosion carbon steel, common material buildings exposed waters, several experiments have been carried out under controlled conditions using steel bars water containing consortia from AMD river Belt. all out, remarkable oxidation supplemented iron was observed presence bacteria. Using as sole source, we slight bars, but when culture media elemental sulfur, severely damaged. Since inoculum come surface water, well oxygenated, nutrient-poor river, obtained results discussed based facultative metabolism acidophilic

An evaluation of carbon steel corrosion under stagnant seawater conditions.

Corrosion of 1020 carbon steel coupons in natural seawater over a 1-year period was more aggressive under strictly anaerobic stagnant conditions than under aerobic stagnant conditions as measured by weight loss and instantaneous corrosion rate (polarization resistance). Under oxygenated conditions, a two-tiered oxide layer of lepidocrocite/goethite formed. The inner layer was extremely tenaciou...

Anaerobic Biodegradation of Alternative Fuels and Associated Biocorrosion of Carbon Steel in Marine Environments.

Fuels that biodegrade too easily can exacerbate through-wall pitting corrosion of pipelines and tanks and result in unintentional environmental releases. We tested the biological stability of two emerging naval biofuels (camelina-JP5 and Fischer-Tropsch-F76) and their potential to exacerbate carbon steel corrosion in seawater incubations with and without a hydrocarbon-degrading sulfate-reducing...

Predation in two species of leech under laboratory conditions

Two 60 day experiments on predation behavior of leeches were conducted concurrently. In the first, medicinal leeches, Hirudo orientalis (Utevsky and Trontelj, 2005) were fed to satiation on bovine blood and subsequently transferred into two large opaque plastic containers of equal size but with differing temperatures, 6-7?C and 23-24?C, containing starved Erpobdella octoculata (L.). At the high...

Growth of Corophium volutator under laboratory conditions.

Temperature-dependent growth is an important factor in the population model of Corophium volutator that was developed to translate responses in a 10-day acute bioassay to ecological consequences for the population. The growth rate, however, was estimated from old data, based on a Swedish population. Therefore, new growth rates are estimated herein from two experiments using Corophium volutator....

Studies of Carbon Steel Corrosion in Atmospheric Conditions

One of the most frequently corrosion type is the atmospheric corrosion. Carbon steel behavior at atmospheric corrosion is presented on base of the literature data study. This has been reported to account for more failures in terms of cost and tonnage than any other type. About 80% from all degradations produced by corrosion in the metallic constructions are due to the atmospheric corrosion. The...
